Goondiwindi is a modern, progressive town with an exciting future.

Some 5,000 people live in the town, with a further 6,000 in the surrounding Waggamba and Moree Plains Shires for whom it is the major centre for business, shopping and entertainment.

There are excellent services and facilities available, including:
-a vibrant downtown business area with a full range of retail outlets and professional services,
-all the necessary inputs and services for primary producers
one secondary school, two primary schools, two pre-schools and a kindergarten to cater for educational needs
-excellent child care facilities with a day care centre and family day care program
-a modern 60-bed hospital, aged persons home, private doctors, dentists and other health professionals
-an impressive Community Cultural Centre with outstanding facilities and the capability to accommodate large conferences, social functions and live performances
-quality clubs, restaurants, hotels, motels and caravan parks
-well appointed sporting facilities to cater for all major sports

Goondiwindi spans the Northern bank of the Macintyre River which forms the border with New South Wales. The river is the lifeblood of the area, providing water for towns, stock, irrigation and industry. The same majestic river red gums line the Macintyre as when explorer Allan Cunningham discovered it in 1827, only a couple of decades before the first settlers came to the area.

The town's prosperity derives from its role as a commercial, service and recreation centre for a vast agricultural and pastoral sector which produces some of Australia's best wheat, beef cattle, wool and cotton for domestic and overseas markets. In good seasons, Waggamba Shire is right near the top of the list of Australia's premier primary production regions.

The local people are known for their warm hospitality and the town for its surprisingly attractive environment considering its inland location. Placed second seven times in its’ category as a Tidy Towns winner, the tree-lined streets, public parks and beautiful gardens are a source of local pride and give great pleasure to visitors. Situated on the Western edge of the world-renowned Darling Downs, the country is flat and open, criss-crossed by tree lined rivers and watercourses. There is a sense of space and the promise of productivity on the extensive black soil plains. An abundance of bird life is a feature in good seasons, and there are many pleasant places to camp and fish.
